The uncompleted collages are in yesterdays post fragmented Landscape collage is in the log or recent picture file.

As time passes so do we, the chances we loose we can not restore , we can try again, we are not guaranteed that what we do Will be successful this time. Got a bunch of stuff framed and ready to be shipped out. Just have to pack them up, but that depends on the heat. Its hot here, too hot to package in the garage which isn't air conditioned. Besides have to get a picture framed for the show on Wednesday July 1st. First Show I've entered this year at N.B.A.L.

I don't mean to complain.
It would seem that the congress in its love affair with the president are hell bent on taxing the american public as never before seen. Since we are in the middle of a recession it is even worse.
With the passage of a bill put forth and they were not given time to read it again, sound familiar. Cap and Trade in an unprecidented attempt to control global warming that doesn't exist they will tax every thing produced in America from cars to electricity on every one who uses anything.

I have all but finished three of the watercolor collages I have been working on.

I have to finish the frame on my "Hill Country" Painting for the Texas Show at the New Braunfels Art League.
As well as work to try to finish the collages and watercolors I am working on at the moment.

Then I have to frame a collage for the Seguin - Oakwood show in August. Started rereading some of Dave Hickeys righting.

With the death of Michael Jackson an era comes to a close. Hopefully his penchant for little children will pass along as well. As an Artist he was unbeatable in his prime. Arguably he invented the music video, or at the least reinvented and elevated it to the level of an Art form.

Oh the price of fame, the misfortunes of an obsessed life style and the problems of the abused child. Rest in Peace Michael, I only hope you came to know and accept Jesus as your savor.

Working still more collages and a wax pastel over digital piece from mom's back yard, which id s a misnomer since its beyond the car port out her door,I am continuing to struggle, the collages are difficult to get to where I want them to be, If I use trice papers the wrinkle, which is fine then I sand them smooth and paint over them.

Working on a method to permanently fix the water color so it can not be rendered the painted surface soluble again to change the consistency and hue. It's supposed to be 105 today so I guess I spend the day painting, or at least preparing to paint. I have to finish the frame on my Hill Country Painting for the Texas Show at the New Braunfels Art League.

Collage 10.1
10" x 18" Mixed media: Watercolor,
acrylic, ink and collage
$350.00 2009

Time goes on and with its passing, are missed chances to change your life. It is remarkable what you can get done on Father's Day

Here is the reintroduction of "collage 10". After initially releasing this piece I found that it really needed some more work, in definition of areas, before I felt satisfied with its presentation. So I have finished it as you can see above.

Fragmented Landscape Collage no.11.1
11" x 20" Mixed media: Watercolor,
acrylic, ink and collage
$350.00 2009

Also I have republished the collage Fragmented Landscape Collage no. 11.1 based on my premise about fragmented landscape images being mere memory fragments of landscape elements seen in the past. This pieces was originally done to join a lot of what I have been doing lately with my painting and my collage pieces.

June 18

I am again working on watercolor and collage , in fact I have redone collage No. 10 which was posted below, as well as a number more in a new series.

I continue to explore the fast food wrapper as a collage element. I will also go to rice paper and tracing paper for more transparency and lightening effects, once I am reasonably comfortable with each I will endeavor to do more work with both exploiting there strengths and weaknesses.

We will have to see how this goes, I am also working on a wax pastel over b/w digital photograph, similar to the one I had done of Mom's backyard. Will post as they become available.

Still have a number to frame and other projects to do so will see what gets done and posted.

A day to stand back and look over and valuate my position as an Artist. I continue to fight with my self on the appropriateness of what I am doing. I guess I need someone to say to me hey good job keep up the good work, Then I have to say , Where are you guy, that you think that anyone notices what you are or what you are doing.I am, or should be doing what I want and feel will best express what I am about. If I can't be honest with myself, who will be with me.

June 16

Another day of hot weather 100+ yesterday, I believe that's three or four in a row, Must be Texas.

Spending the day reworking collage 10 and start a few more,as well as going to visit my brother and his wife at my mom's house. Spent a lot of time yesterday cutting rice paper and tracing film for collaging elements. These work for me when try into introduce a lightening element and quality instead of paint the as wrinkle and give texture. Tissue paper is also great because it dissolves and gives more texture and if stained or pre-colored gives the element of staining. This gives a soft ethereal quality that I like. I am trying with some success to emulate the qualities I have seen in Gerald Brommers work, he is elegant in his work with watercolor and collage. I'll show them when I finish here or in the collage of my website.

Sorry about yesterday. kind of got carried away. You would think that after 60 I would learn to control my tendency to complain and berate those I don't agree with. Well thats another reason for my blog.

June 15

It seems to me that you need to call a fish a fish. If something is or fits all of the test to be something, then that is what it should be. As an example lets explore drawing:

Drawing is a visual art that makes use of any number of drawing instruments to mark a two-dimensional medium. Common instruments include graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons, charcoals, chalk, pastels, markers, stylus, or various metals like silverpoint. An artist who practices or works in drawing may be referred to as a draftsman or draughtsman" taken from wikipedia and wikinary

A small amount of material is released onto the two dimensional medium which leaves a visible mark—the process is similar to that of painting. The most common support for drawing is paper, although other materials such as cardboard, plastic, leather, canvas and board, may be used. Temporary drawings may be made on a blackboard or whiteboard, or indeed almost anything. The medium has also become popular as a means of public expression via graffiti art, because of the easy availability of permanent markers.taken from wikipedia and wikinary

From this we can see that a simple definition is impossible. You can not say that drawing is mark making on a surface , mostly paper. It seems to me that too many critics and artists one to spin this to their own favor. Paper need not be the most expensive out on the market.

Paper is thin material mainly used for writing upon, printing upon or for packaging. It is produced by pressing together moist fibers, typically cellulose pulp derived from wood, rags or grasses, and drying them into flexible sheets.

Paper is a versatile material with many uses. Whilst the most common is for writing andprinting upon, it is also widely used as a packaging material, in many cleaning products, in a number of industrial and construction processes, and occasionally as a food ingredient, particularly in Asian cultures.taken from wikipedia and wikinary

There is no simple answer to anything, any more everything can be tailored to fit anything.

Why you must/should ask am I getting so hung up on definitions. It seems that definition govern almost everything. and if it doesn't fit with in a definition then it most be something else. Ask Bill Clinton about is.

What about photography. can the result of point and shoot machinery be Art. It would seem so. "The word "photography" comes from the Greek φώς (phos) "light" + γραφίς (graphis) "stylus", "paintbrush" or γραφή (graphê) "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together meaning "drawing with light." Traditionally, the products of photography have been callednegatives and photographs, commonly shortened to photos."taken from mwikipedia

A photograph (often shortened to photo) is an image created by light falling on a light-sensitive surface, usually photographic film or an electronic image such as a CCD or a CMOS chip. Most photographs are created using a camera, which uses a lens to focus the scene's visible wavelengths of light into a reproduction of what the human eye would see. The process and practice of creating photographs is called photography. The word "photograph" coined 1839 by Sir John Herschel and is based on the Greek φώς (phos), "light" + γραφίς (graphis), "stylus", "paintbrush" or γραφή (graphê), "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together meaning "drawing with light".[1]
taken from wikipedia and wikinary

Ah it would seem that a photograph is the result of using a too. and that toll does all of the work, then how can that be art?

That moves me to my Art Mixed Media Art

"here is an important distinction between "mixed-media" artworks and "multimedia art". Mixed media tends to refer to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media. For example, a work on canvas that combines paint, ink, and collage could properly be called a "mixed media" work - but not a work of "multimedia art." The term multimedia art implies a broader scope than mixed media, combining visual art with non-visual elements (such as recorded sound, for example) or with elements of the other arts (such as literature, drama, dance, motion graphics, music, or interactivity)." ]taken from wikipedia and wikinary

Ihave a real problem with people who are so closed minded that they can not accept something new or different into their strict little world of Art. After all Modern Art is now in excess of 150 years old. I would then suggest that any means of expression that is not an overt copy of someone else creative work then it is acceptable. Art is in the eye of the creator, not the critic or one who stands to make a profit from it.
Enough for now.

Ya know how everything comes together! Some times.

Yesterday I got notifications from a number of health care companies that my bills will not be paid because information is forth coming. And this is supposed to make me feel better about a government run health care company.

The government ones we have now don't do their jobs. They just push it off to some one else. Usually that's me the bill payer.

Just like everything else in life there are those things that are good then there's the rest.

It would seem that health Care will go the way of global warming. No one really thinks we need it bot they cant prove it so it goes.

How about we use the egg heads in Washington to figure out how something is going to work before we announce it to the world, that this now our policy..

Well as far as I can see nothing is coming together for our President.

1. Health care is becoming over bearing, and too expensive. Even for this
president.

2. I don't want to run the car companies. Then why are you firing CEO's?
why Are we lending them money so that we can get what we want. If Fiat 's
were so much in demand here why pick them why did you let them take over
Chrysler?

3. Why can't the banks who were forced to take Tarp money not allowed to
pay it back until they jump through your hoops.

4. Why are our allies in Europe and the middle east not taking your advice,
or even listening to us.

5. Why is the President of the United States bullying people, his constituents.

6. Why are the crooks in congress still there

?. Its beginning to look like the same ole thang, different day different name

Time to move on to something new. The government is now involved in more smoke and mirrors than substance, is there a wonder that government favor on programs and economics corrections to present situations are falling rapidly.

There is no visible response to a number of problems, only a reckless abandon of the problems:
1) Iran, we need to meet this threat head on and stop them from any fur there sponsor of terrorism.
2) North Korea is destabilizing the whole if the South China Sea region and they need to be stopped not appeased.
3) the U.N. does nothing and they need a fire lit under them or there will be all out war in the middle East and else where.
4) We have a president who continues to make foolish and dangerous mistakes in foreign and domestic policy.
5)Overtly liberal nomination of judges that are more aimed at appeasing the left than be a judge which should mean that they are not biased one way or the other.

It is time for me to get back to my Art.

I as an individual person can not change the freight train we have in Washington.

I will spend my time on something that matters, at least to me. As I finish pieces I will post them.
So what appears below is the continuation of the painted collage where I explore more of the landscape elements I have in the past. these two are a little larger than in the past, except for collage 1a , college 1b which can be view on the http://jimkamprath.com website in the collage section.

I feel bad that I didn't here if the supreme court had made a decision on the car dealership ruling by the white house. I really feel that some of what I see is the reactions of men in a hurry to get something done before every one catches on and pulls the plug.

If I am right then a lot of senators terms may be there last unless they can convince every in that they don't go along with the debacle. When the stuff hits the fan then a lot of people are going to get splattered. Not the least will be Harry Reid and Nancy Pilosi, then there is Chris Dodd and Charley Rangle.

As one who ran a school for a Lutheran Church for a couple of decades I know that things can be done with a lot less than they are talking about today. As education gets bigger, the only thing that get hit is the Administration. noting else will trickle down.A lot of the time if you take away the money people will tailor their work to fit with in the new peramaters. But the existing paradigm is spend more and get more done.

I feel a little lonely out her having to say whats on my mind and not having much company. As a permanently disabled person. I will be one of the first people who this government is going to pull the plug on.

It would now seem that a brake will be applied to the run away economic debacle in Washington.

The supreme court has said that they would look at the whole deal with forcing a company into bankruptcy. The giving of favorable status for repaying debt to those who should not have had the status, but were given it by a political officer. could this mean that finally eyes will be open instead of the policy of having eyes wide shut. is this foe fear of reprisals of a really mob like organization in the White House. Could this signal the change we have been looking for.No more jobs saved. Does this mean the 94% of the working force that has not been fired or laid off are those whose jobs have been saved? Could this possibly mean a turn to some semblance of normalcy? We will see today a 4pm when the Supreme Court renders a decision as to weather they go on from here.

I am stupefied at what has become of our government. I thought I was safe here in Texas but I see from reports[I don't know if I can trust the news media, they all seem to be on Obama's side] that here also a concerted effort is in place to Socialize the state government. Enactment of existing laws that do not conform to a Socialist frame of mind are usurped and ignored.

If we are to live in a Socialist society. What has become of our freedom of choice? Since Obahm'a only won the election by less than 4%. How is this a mandate to change everything, we know and have known for over two hundred years. How is it that they can come in furtively make changes under the guise of openness and transparency and yet very thing is cloaked in different cloths.

Are we such fools that we allow this under the guise of freedom. Why can't they come out and say what they really are about? Are we thought of as such fools that we would not understand?

Are there plans so good that we would think them false. If there plans are so good why are they kept hidden? What can we do to make sure that we agree on what is being done. The last time I checked there are over 45 million voters that disagreed with current and possible future proposed policies.

June 07

Well I guess I'll talk a little about my Art today, I am currently working two larger Acrylic, watercolor, Sumi ink and collage pieces. These new pieces push a little on the boundaries I have had before.

When I start to create a piece, I usually have an idea in mind when I start. So what is in mind and what does it entail? This is a simplified version of my process.

1) it has to be an inkling of a concept or a glimmer of an idea, not so much that you can see the finished work in your mind, but a way of looking at something may be a bit different.

2)Then I have to take the glimmer and flesh it out so to speak . You have to actually put something down on paper

3)Then the process changes. Training I have had says that things should be a certain way. A structure must exist to sustain the concept then transfer to a design . The concept becomes real. There must be balance, Symmetrical or asymmetrical it must be balanced. Balance says objects in the design must be placed in such a manor as to be pleasing to the trained observer. The untrained observer must also be able to appreciate what they see.

4)Then changes to the design may be maid in conjunction to the original. I may or not be in line or with in the original concept.

5) When all the preliminaries come together I begin the transformation to a piece of Art.I introduce an element as a linear element to satisfy then and tie together pieces in the design.

6) I add white to remove pieces and strengthen the design by creating more elaborate depth and contrast. I try to enhance the negative space.

7) I add color. I start with monochromatic browns and move up the color scale to add and subtract elements. All of the color at this point is in watercolor to give a more transparent ethereal feel.

8) I can go no from here in a myriad of direction depending own how I feel and how I am moved depending on how I see the migration of the piece from concept to completion.

While this is a simplification of my process. I may at another time elaborate on this.

So it has been 65 years since D-Day none of the National leaders were alive on that day, I would not be born for a little over two years. I think most of Americans today no longer understand what our country and the world were going through on this day, when so many boys would be killed. in an attempt to take back the European continent from the hands of the Socialist government of Germany that felt they should rule the world. Most of Europe does not educate their children in what really happened in this war to liberate them, Most of the European countries tell their children that they saved themselves, I can understand tat they don't want to have to admit that they needed someone else to save them.

Now we find out that FDR had to be coaxed into joining the war. "They were still Isolationist. If the Japanese wouldn't have bombed Pearl Harbor, we probably wouldn't have responded at all.

Another week has come and gone. It would be personal to think if things have gotten better or worse, and at best it would be relative.

When we get older we tend to think in streams and these streams encompass the present and our past and are intertwined with the future we see, our relativistic future. The future we see could be coming, not necessarily any part of what is to come.More of a gate way of possibilities. As I get older I don't so much worry about the future, as wonder how the people I know will be caught up in it. Will they be successful or will they fail.

We do not often consider the consequences of our Actions. Is it like we are taught in the church that all of our actions are ordained and orchestrated by God. If in fact that is the case then there nothing we do can change any thing. We seek to do is of no consequence. So since we are not a viable instrument of change. We might as well do what we can for those closes to to make our Mark. For those of us in Art we must seek a way to communicate what we are to those who will see our work.

Enough verbage for today.

Something else I need to get off my chest, I do not believe that the human race is or has more than one race. We are the people of God, made in his image, not in his images. If we were different races how could so much of what we are be the same, We do not have different DNA. We are for the most part interchangeable. Cromanion Man was not killed off he was absorbed into our species. Too much of us is interchangeable with each other. We can use the blood of almost any human. Almost any organ that is transplant able is computable.

The whole race thing is us finding fault, we need some on to blame. If it isn't the Jews for money its the Blacks for inferiority. Its the Muslims for terror. Its the Nazi for atrocity. If we look we can see that all of our problems transcend pour concept of race.

I am not a fan of mixing Art and Politics, I don't think they really mix well. Sort of like phosphorus and water In the past Artists have been very vocal about the politics of the day, to no avail , it may have moved them along.

As to my Art, it continues. I plan on doing a number of Collages, and have considered doing a decollage for good measure. I have not given up landscapes, but will be using collage to create more of the reconstructed landscapes I have done in the past.

It would suppose that we as a species can make judgments that are critical toward our own best interests. Our species history is full of examples of our not being able to make critical changes. Look at Jim Jones, a whole group of people are fooled into believing something not true. Look at the followers of the Hailey -Bop comet who thought they were waiting for a ship in the tail of the comet to come and pick them up . Why do we need to be taken away?

I realize that the mind can make us do things that are absurd. Why is it the when Hitler came to power they didn't see he was evil. Because he was what they thought they needed. So in the name of what they think they need they start a world war and the purging of society, that kills countless millions.

As we continue to allow abortion on demand, we are approaching the number of deaths of Jews purged in Natzi Germany[6,000,000]. So what big jump will we as a people make because we think we need it. Russia purged its society, China purged its society. From the looks of it, I see the possible purge in America of its elderly. By selectively deciding the need for medical procedures, the elderly will be culled from the society by allowing them to die off, to make room for the next generation. It would be a way to take care of a lot of the extra cost put into the government lately. After all there is the increased medical cost keeping the people alive, increased food costs, Social Security would be safe the government wouldn't have to pay back the trillions it spent from the Social Security fund. Old people can be a large expense.

It does not seem that things have made an abrupt change with the coming of a new month. We are all still in the throws of a large economic debacle. Some have said off our own making. I am not so sure that we can effect the out come of economics by our measly maneuvers.Just as we as a species can effect the climate of our climate. Let us not over think our own significance.

What does it matter if you choose the world and it doesn't want you. We cannot always see what we want outside of those things which are vain. Can not we choose what we need before what we want? Is it not enough that there are those that have chosen us, for what does it matter if we loose our souls. But sibnce they can'yt really find it .Maby it's not there.

The preceding are the two new Watercolor and collages I have completed. In this and the following piece I have attempted to fuse the color to the collage shapes to give a more unified quality to the composition.
As with all interpretive work especially my abstracted pieces, composition is the most important element. Above all I strive for a balance between the shape , the negative spaces and the color which can take on or be all of the above.

About Me

My photo
I have spent 35 years teaching in schools from New York to L.A.County. I have been a principal in New York and California. I tend to paint what I see, or at least what I think I see in my memories.
